This article argues that cheaper electricity in Cyprus will not come from giving the incumbent special treatment. The central issue is whether market rules create genuine competition, transparent costs and investment signals, or whether they protect old structures under the language of transition.
The EAC has an important role in the system, but market reform cannot be designed around one organisation’s comfort. If Cyprus wants lower prices over time, the rules must allow new suppliers, storage, flexible demand and independent producers to compete on workable terms.
The practical question is not whether the EAC wins or loses. It is whether consumers get a market that rewards efficiency, exposes real costs and encourages investment where the system actually needs it.
